Thursday, I had a cerclage ( surgery for incompetent cervix) and am now on bed-rest. In the recovery room after surgery, my husband asked how it went. I said, well whatever I had imagined it to be- it was worse. Ok, so this wasn't brain surgery, and the doctors kept saying "it's no big deal, it will only take fifteen minutes." Well, I guess for them it was easy, but for someone like me who has only had two other surgeries in my life, both of which I was thankfully completely asleep for, I don't think it was easy at all.
First of all, they had a hard time finding a spot in my spinal cord to give me the spinal block, which made me a little panicky, no big deal if they get it wrong- you're only paralyzed for life! Then, after the spinal wore in I had this horrible feeling of being completely disconnected from my legs. I won't go into anymore details- I'd rather forget the whole thing. But being at a hospital from 9am-4:30pm is not fifteen minutes!
My legs are mine again, and I'm feeling pretty good, but I am not supposed to do anything- which would be great if I wanted a vacation from life, but I happen to like my life. I like my job, my church responsibility, my home, my travel benefits. I had not planned on having surgery Thursday and I certainly had not planned on the possibility of after surgery- complete bed -rest for six months. But I know that I am carrying a new life, and this surgery and bed-rest, may prevent the early labor and problems that I have had in previous pregnancies. So I will take one day at a time and learn to enjoy my time off.
